The first daily dose of the drug, the world's second-biggest drug, could become available by the end of the year.
The European nation's government announced Wednesday that it would begin offering daily doses of the drug in the first month of its monthly prescription drug benefit, called Eroxon (Erectile Dysfunction Drug), to all of Europe's leading prescription drugs, including Pfizer's Viagra and Bayer's Bayer XR.
Viagra, the most popular treatment for erectile dysfunction, is already available in some European countries, including the United Kingdom and Ireland, where it is sold. Germany has also offered Viagra for a second time in a month, as well as a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
"Erectile dysfunction is a serious health problem in a country that has the highest number of people with diabetes," said the health care executive at the European Commission. "We have no choice but to give up Viagra."
Viagra also has a long-standing safety and efficacy track record in European countries, which have strict rules on its use in Europe. It was approved by the European Medicines Agency in 1996 for use in the European Union.
The European Medicines Agency's approval of Viagra for use in the European Union came at the end of last year, with Pfizer's Viagra now available for a second time in a month. Viagra in the United States is approved for use in 20 mg tablets by the FDA in November.
Eroxon, which is manufactured by Pfizer, was approved for use in the United States by the FDA in 2003. Eroxon is not approved for use in other countries, including Canada and Germany. The drug has been linked to a rare condition known as priapism, which is a painful erection lasting more than four hours.
Viagra and its generic equivalents are used by more than 90 countries around the world, including Britain, France, Italy, and Germany, where it is sold. The drugmaker is based in San Diego, California, and sells its products in 20 countries, including Europe, where it has sold its own generic drug. The European Commission has not yet approved a generic version of Viagra, which is used to treat impotence.
Pfizer's Viagra, which is manufactured by Pfizer, is available in 50 mg and 100 mg tablets and the European Commission is considering approving a generic version of the drug. The drugmaker is not seeking approval for an over-the-counter version of the drug.
Eroxon is also available in 50 mg and 100 mg tablets and has been approved by the FDA for use in the European Union for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. A daily dose of the drug will also be available in a month's supply.
Viagra is not available in Europe on its own, but the government has been pushing for the drug to be sold in a month's supply for more than six years to treat erectile dysfunction.
The drugmaker will continue to sell its generic Viagra and offer the drug in a new country for a second time. The drugmaker is based in Ireland, and plans to market the drug in the United States.
Viagra, which was approved for use in the United States in September, will be sold in the United Kingdom for the first time and the country will sell a month's supply for a maximum of six months. The drugmaker will also sell its own generic version of Viagra in the United States to help cover the cost of the drug.
